Cannes Film Festival
Cannes International Film Festival
was first time founded in 1939. Is held annually and considered as one
of the most prestigious film festivals in the world. It is in the
"Big Five" group of festivals which are aslo Toronto,
Sundance, Berlin and Venice. According
to Hollywood Reporter it is the "grandaddy" of all festivals
despite of the fact that it is not actually the oldest one..which is the
Venice film festival, first held in 1932.
It is a private festival and is held
usually in May in south France,
on the French riviera (Cote DŽAzur) in Cannes.
Awards: Palme
dŽOr (Golden Palm) is the very prestigious award given to best films. The
festival jury is selected from international movie professionals. There
are also another awards, like the Grand Prix award - 2nd prestigious award
(Grand Prize) History: It
was in 1938 when the French Minister decided to create this international
Cannes film festival. Louis Lumiere agreed in 1939 to become the first
president of the festival which was set to 1st September 1939. However,
the festival had to be postponed because of the WW2.
In 1946 the festival was reopened and was held in the old Cannes casino. In
years 1948-1950 there were some budgetary problems and so the festival was
not held. Palais des
Festival - inaugurated in 1949 and was replaced in 1983 by a new one. 1971
- Charlie Chaplin awarded by French Minister the Legion of Honor.
